Diseases of the kidneys affect millions of Canadians and disproportionately affects disadvantaged people. This is where the all-important role of research comes in, according to Director of Research for the Division of Nephrology at Queen’s Dr. Rachel Holden.

Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) is the regional hub in the hub and spoke model of providing renal care across all regions of southeastern Ontario. The program has satellite dialysis units in Belleville, Brockville, Napanee, Picton, Smiths Falls, Bancroft and Moose Factory.

Dr. Karen Smith, professor and clinician in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), has been practicing in Kingston and Queen’s University since 1994. Her clinical and research focus is brain and spinal cord injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Dr. Christine White is a professor in the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Medicine at Queen’s University. She has been at Queen’s since 2005 and is the director of the Multidisciplinary Care Kidney Clinic (MCKC) at Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

Dr. Jagdeep Walia is a clinical geneticist and the Director of Research in the Department of Pediatrics. The focus of his clinical work is seeing individuals and families with different genetic conditions starting from before birth to after death. His research focus is on developing gene therapies for these genetic conditions, largely incurable ones.
