Dr. Ahmed J. Abushama joins the Department of Pediatrics in August as a Pediatric Neurologist and Assistant Professor at Queen's University. He earned his medical degree from Damascus University, completed his residency in General Pediatrics in Jerusalem, and pursued fellowships in Pediatric Neurology and Pediatric Epilepsy at the Hospital for Sick Children, University of Toronto. Dr. Abushama specializes in managing pediatric epilepsy, neuromuscular disorders, and acquired brain injuries. He is also dedicated to medical education and has received numerous awards for his teaching excellence.
Dr. Mays Shawawrah joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Neurology in August. She is a Canadian-trained vascular and multiple sclerosis neurologist, certified by the Jordanian Board of Neurology. Dr. Shawawrah completed a two-year stroke fellowship at McMaster University/Hamilton General Hospital, followed by a one-year multiple sclerosis fellowship. She earned her medical degree from Jordan University of Science & Technology. Dr. Shawawrah has a strong background in hospital-based neurology, outpatient general neurology, acute stroke medicine, and multiple sclerosis, with a commitment to clinical education.
Dr. Daenis Camiré joins the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in August. Originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dr. Camiré completed his BSc in Nursing at Lakehead University and gained experience working as a Registered Nurse on a Mobile Suboxone Treatment Team in Northern Ontario. He earned his Medical Degree from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and completed his Anesthesiology Residency and MSc in Healthcare Quality at Queen's University. Dr. Camiré has served as a Canadian Armed Forces Reservist and a Critical Care Clinical Associate at Lakeridge Health Hospital. His professional interests include Head and Neck Anesthesia, Perioperative Medicine, Critical Care, Transport Medicine, Perioperative Pain Management, Medical Education, and Quality Improvement.
Dr. Tyler Pettes joins the Department of Psychiatry in September. He completed his medical degree at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has been a Psychiatry Resident at Queen's University since 2020, serving as Chief Resident since 2022. Prior to this, he was a Psychiatry Resident at Western University. Dr. Pettes holds a Master's in Nutrition Sciences and a Bachelor's in Physical Health and Education from the University of Toronto. His clinical and research interests include mental health, substance use, and LGBTQ health.
Dr. Peter Ip Fung Chun joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Allergy and Immunology in September. He completed his Adult Internal Medicine training at the University of Toronto, followed by a fellowship in Adult and Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Allergy at the University at Buffalo. His clinical interests include allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma, drug allergy, eczema, urticaria, angioedema, anaphylaxis, and food allergies.
Dr. Nicolas Santi joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology in September. He completed his Internal Medicine training at the University of Ottawa, followed by a Cardiology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Santi recently completed advanced fellowship training in Adult Echocardiography at the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Minqi Xu joins the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine in September with a focus on gastrointestinal, breast, gynecological, and head and neck pathology. He completed his Anatomical Pathology Residency at Queen's and recently finished a Gastrointestinal and Anatomic Pathology fellowship at the University of Toronto. Dr. Xu holds a Bachelor of Medicine and two Master's degrees in Cellular and Molecular Biology and the Pathologists’ Assistant Program.
Dr. Vanessa Martelli joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Respirology and Sleep Medicine in September. She completed her medical degree at McGill University in 2014, followed by Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine training at the University of Toronto. Most recently, she completed a fellowship at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health in Hamilton. Dr. Martelli has a strong interest in population-based research and health economic analysis.
Dr. Fraser Johnson joins the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine in September. He earned his medical degree from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in 2017 and completed his Anesthesiology residency at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Johnson has most recently been an Anesthesiologist at Dalhousie University in Halifax.
Dr. Kirsten Nesset joins the Department of Medicine in the Division of Respirology and Sleep Medicine in September. She earned her medical degree from Queen’s University in 2017, followed by her Internal Medicine residency at Queen’s and a Respirology fellowship at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Nesset brings her expertise in respirology from her most recent role at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton.
